Where it comes from
The Bakharwal moves with the nomadic Bakarwal community on their seasonal migration across the Pir Panjal. It is one of the oldest working breeds in South Asia and is currently listed as critically endangered — conflict, changing livelihoods and the collapse of transhumance have taken the working population to a few thousand at most.
Living with one
This is a true livestock guardian: slow to rouse, immovable once roused, and entirely comfortable making its own decisions at 2am. It is not a companion breed and does not adapt to the plains or to confinement.
If you are not running livestock in the hills, the honest answer is that this dog is not for you — and supporting the Gujjar keepers who still work them is a better contribution than buying one.
