Where it comes from
Gaddi shepherds move flocks between the Kangra valley and high summer pasture, and the Gaddi Kutta moves with them — living outdoors year-round at altitudes where most breeds could not function. Its job is not to attack predators but to interpose and deter.
Tourism, road access and shrinking transhumance have reduced the working population sharply. Crossbreeding with Tibetan Mastiffs has muddied a lot of what is now sold under the name.
Living with one
Livestock guardian temperament is not pet temperament. A Gaddi Kutta makes independent decisions about who belongs, works at night, and does not look to a handler for instructions. This is a feature in a pasture and a liability in a city.
The double coat makes it genuinely unsuited to the plains. Keeping one in Chennai or Delhi summer heat is a welfare problem, not a preference.
