Where it comes from
The Pandikona is one of the least commercialised Indian breeds. Kuruba shepherd families keep them as hunting and guarding dogs across the dry Rayalaseema landscape, with minimal human control over breeding.
That hands-off approach has produced a healthy, weather-hardy, self-reliant dog — and also means there is almost no formal registry, no standard show population, and very little written record.
Living with one
Pandikonas are quiet, extremely low-maintenance and cheap to keep. They are also independent to a degree that frustrates owners expecting responsiveness. They bond with a household rather than a handler.
They are excellent property dogs in rural and semi-rural settings and poor candidates for apartment life.
