Where it comes from
The Rampur was a hunting dog of the Rohilkhand nobility, used on jackal, boar and — in accounts that are hard to verify but persistently repeated — on tiger in packs. The breed declined sharply after independence with the end of princely hunting establishments.
It is now genuinely rare. Serious breeding survives in pockets of Uttar Pradesh, and the population is small enough that inbreeding is a live concern.
Living with one
This is a large, serious dog with a strong guarding instinct layered on top of sighthound speed — an unusual and demanding combination. It needs an experienced owner, hard exercise, and early socialisation that is not optional.
Its very short coat and low body fat make it poorly suited to north Indian winters without a coat, despite being a north Indian breed.
